Exhibition Text
Colors is a visual representation of who I am and a self portrait. Its called Colors and is a fauvist painting, inspired by the movement, Fauvism. It was inspired by Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse. This painting was the one painting that made me feel like an artist; due to it being the first painting I have painted on a canvas. It's called Colors because it contains different colors and it symbolizes who I am by them.
Planning
Artistic Inspiration
I was inspired by the fauvism movement and by these fauvist paintings. I used them as my examples and inspirations when painting my self portrait. I used Marc Chagalls body positioning as my inspirtation. However, my body positioning was not exact but still pretty similar. The colors and strokes are different in every painting. I liked that about all of them and tried to elaborate all of those in my painiting, including a few color tones. Critical Investigation Marc Chagal doesnt really create fauvist work, he creates different art compared to fauvist. The picture I was inspired by was fauvist, but it wasn't even created by him. However, my other inspirations were created by artists but by artists who have not been recognized as much; except one, and that painting was created by Henri Matisse. The portrait of Madame Matisse is world wide known as one of the most famous fauvist paintings. |

Sketches
The sketch I created was to help me know what colors to use in different areas of the face. Some parts I planned on using different colors and in others I planned on using specific colors.
It's really hard to sketch sketches for your self portrait since we used a photograph to trace the image onto the canvas, so instead I created a sketch that would help me set the colors, it helps remind what colors to buy and what's the plan. |
Process
I obtained 4 sides of frames and sticked them together. After that, I grabbed a staple machine and stapled the sides. I then cut canvas cloth and set it on the floor and then set the frame. I cut the cloth and stapled the cloth onto each side of the frame; I had to be careful and not make it too tight or too loose. After I finished setting up my canvas and getting the right tightness to it, I had to staple the extra cloth from each corner. I then painted my background a dark purple so my bright colorful self would stand out. After that, I projected the chosen image onto the canvas and traced the image with a white color pencil. I then painted it. All the colors in the painting came from six colors which are green, white, black, blue, red and yellow; I mixed them and used those colors in my painting.
Experimentation
I experimented and took many different pictures with different positions for my self portrait. I obviously chose the first picture as you can see my self portrait above. I experimented with different clothing and my hair up and down. Since I have curly hair, I knew it was going to be hard, so I experimented but in the end, I went with my hair down and took the risk.

Meaning
The meaning for this self portrait is very meaningful to me because this project made me find the beauty within me. It made me see the beauty inside and the beauty outside. It showed me that i'm beautiful and that means a lot to me, especially when I have had many struggles trying to figure out how and why I should love myself. It's hard but this made me realize that I should love myself because i'm me, i'm beautiful and I should take care and love me.
Reflection
I feel like I did good in my self portrait, and I feel accomplished because I finished it on time and follwed the fauvist movement correctly. I followed the plan I had made and did it. Some challenges I faced were not knowing how to color in the neck and chest; it was a struggle because I didn't know what colors to use or what strokes. A huge difficulty I faced was that I wanted to blend a lot and I couldn't due to my painting being a fauvist painting. Another difficulty was the hair. I was completely lost trying to figure out how to do the strokes for my hair, due to it being curly. Another difficulty was me trying to be satisfied with my painting; I have fixed it many times so it can be satisfying and in the end, after many hours I found it satisfying.
