Dry Point
Exhibition Text
This art piece was created to encourage awareness. I have a passion for elephants and I believe the world should show support and assist elephants due to all the poaching and elephant cruelty going on all around the world for their tusks. In this piece you can see the differences between this piece and my block print because both of them illustrate different positions in an elephant lives. These are happy, alive elephants whereas the other elephants are filled with sadness and gore.

Sketches

I'm creating a series with my block print and this piece; I wanted to create something that would relate with my other piece. I also wanted to do something that would follow the steps of german expressionism and fulfill the similarities to the ads of the elephant campaigns. Last piece was a mother elephant, with her dead child and now its a happy, free mother with her live child.

I made two pieces. My first one didn't come out so well, as you can see. I made some changes and added a few more lines to my sketch and then did it on my second piece; it came out a lot better. I decided to keep my second one.

Proccess
After I decided what piece to go with I had to start the process of printing. The first image shows the paper I was going to print my piece on; I had to set it up in a special liquid for around 6 minutes then take it out so it can dry before I apply my piece. The second and third picture demonstrates the ink and the tool I utilized to spread on my piece. After I spread the ink, I had to wipe it off with paper that I cut out before starting. I wipe the blank areas hard due to it being blank. The areas that had detail, I had to be careful because if I wiped off to much, when I print there wouldn't show much off the detail due to scrubbing hard. Then I would get a long piece of paper, fold it, grab my piece and set it there, then grab my paper that was submerged in water and apply it on top. I would then fold it again and put in the roller. After I finished printing, I wiped my piece with a bit of mineral spirits, so it can be ink free.
Experimentation
I did many prints as you can see above. Some were too dark, some were too light. I changed a few things, as I learned from my mistakes from my other prints. I wasn't as successful as I was on my last time.
Meaning
The meaning of this art piece to me is so significant and important. The love I have for elephants is great due to the way they run things in their packs. They are in a group of females and it is runned by the eldest female elephant. As the young male elephants grow, they leave the pack and go to the wild alone. Elephants survive more in packs and that's probably why poachers get a hold of male elephants more than the female ones. Elephants should be left alone and not be valued by the cost of their ivory tusks, but by the animal that it is. It's such a beautiful animal, and its disgusting how someone is willing to kill something amazing for something so simple. I can guarantee that humans wouldn't like to get their nose chopped off due to its great value; then why be considered hypocrites and do the same to animals who don't have the ability to defend themselves against lethal weapons and poachers. I am trying to bring elephant awareness through my art pieces, because elephants deserve better.
Reflection
I believe that I am trying to do good, because i'm trying to show the life of the elephants; perhaps it's not world wide but its around my community and school. I'm trying to make a change. I believe I did a great art piece, my printing could have been better, but I tried my best. My ideas evolved a lot throughout this project and I believe that it was for the best because it's better and good. adding detail was very difficult because if you went in too deep, it could have made a hole or even break the piece so I had to be careful with that, but I made it well.
ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
My inspiration, which was the elephant campaign posters had a lot of effect in my painting due to its meaning and representation. I believe that this dry point will probably not make a difference to the world, but to me it will because I want this world to change. It's a way of representing the happiness of the elephants and how their lives should actually be.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The authors overall approach regarding the topic of my inspiration is that it covers how elephant lives should actually be and it's a piece to stop elephant cruelty.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Some generalizations and conclusions I have discovered about this certain topic is that people and organizations have been fighting for the lives of elephants, but poachers don't understand the effect they are making on the world by eliminating one by one.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my inspirational research was happiness, life and nostalgia.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I believe that animal cruelty, specifically on elephants has had a major impact on the world but not on us humans. There is so many people out there trying to save elephants, but there is many poachers too. It's like a fight against death and life.
