Organic VS Industrial
Exhibition Text: The Tree of Gratitude is a tree to give thanks, that reminds people to be thankful of not only the things they have, but of life too. The Tree of Gratitude was inspired by Gustav Klimt and his artwork, especially The Tree of Life, Stoclet Frieze. The Tree of Gratitude can serve as a pedestal for anyone who comes to it, can be reminded to give thanks.
Planning
Artistic Inspiration
I have gone to many stores throughout my life and have been fascinated to see trees made out of metals. Some of them have been in Michaels, Kohls, Target, etc. Another Artistic inspiration of mine, is Gustav Klimt. I have always been fascinated by his work and his art always manages to give me a feeling of gratitude, In this case, my inspiration was his work and life itself. Critical Investigation There is art everywhere. In stores there is art to hang on your walls and it really isn't that expensive because the artists aren't known. I have seen so much good art in Target, Marshalls, Khols and other really good stores. I give those stores credit because they have so much good art, that no one gives them credit for. However, I also give credit to Gustav Klimt. He is a famous artist who painted The Tree of Life, Stoclet Frieze. Obviously, his was in a canvas and mine isn't. Instead mine is metal and welded onto more pieces. |

Process
My dad is a welder, so we went to Home Depot and bought different pieces of metals and as you can see, he taught me and helped me weld a few pieces of metals into a tree. My dad has a welding machine and he taught me how to weld the stick into the base. After I welded that, I welded other branches into the trunk and so on. When I finished welding the rest of the branches, I welded the "leaves" or shapes, however you would like to call it. To me they are shapes and leaves on a tree. However, after I did that, I welded some areas that needed some more resistance and force to keep the objects together.
Experimentation
Some experimentation I made was with holding the tool differently. I noticed that I could weld a lot better with my left hand, instead of my right hand and I am right handed person. That was impressive to me because I usually use my right hand for everything. Also, at the beginning I was only using circle metals as my leaves and then decided to use not only circles but other shapes as well. I used triangles, squares, circles and cylinder liked shapes. I experimented with leaving the color of the object as it was, but instead decided to experiment with other colors and painting it.
Meaning
The meaning to my piece was that the Tree of Gratitude is thankful for live and everything life has to other. The leaves represent all races. The latinos can be the circles, the squares the black, the triangles the white and so on. The tree holds everyone together and everyone at the same level. It shows equality, justice and harmony and how how a tree of life should be and symbolize.
Reflection
This project was very cool and interesting! I tried something new and really bonded with my dad over something he does for a living. Doing this project showed me how dangerous welding is and how much my dad does. I did a small tree, while my dad does things that are way bigger than us or this tree. This project made me think a lot. I really enjoyed welding, it was really fun and entertaining. The fire and it just made me feel in control of my artwork. It's a great feeling. Finding a project that fits the criteria on it being both industrial and organic, was hard to me since it was my first time working with something of industrial material. I decided I was going to do a tree since trees are organic, but the material I am utilizing is industrial. Also, this tree has not only an organic meaning to it, but organic space within it.
