Ephemera
Exhibition Text
This art piece represents the voices of all races, genders and people who have been offended or harassed by Donald Trump and his supporters. Recuerdanos is a Spanish word meaning, remember us. I was inspired by Donald Trump and his cruelty towards other people that are not in his race. My artistic inspiration, however was Andy Goldsworthy. I developed new skills using this medium, and I incorporated new techniques that Andy Goldsworthy used.

Artistic Inspiration
|
My inspiration was my people, my neighbors, the new president, his supporters and this country. I do not support him and he will never be my president. However, he is the president of the United States now and I wanted to create something that would speak up for me and everyone who has been offended or harassed by him or his supporters. I created my project out of leaves because its something that will die within days, like this country as soon as he is in office. However, the instructor from MIAD told me to do it out of fake leaves to represent how artificial the United States is. I made the the words out of real leaves, because that represents the people he has hurt. I also did it in Spanish, to show the average white male that they depend on a Spanish speaking person because the average white male does not know how to speak or read Spanish. My artistic inspiration was Andy Goldsworthy; I was fascinated by the idea of using leaves to create art and when I saw his work, I was simply in awe. I wanted my work to have an effect to other people like the one I had on his work. I wanted to do something outside and he was the first one that popped up in my head.

Critical Investigation
Donald Trump is the new, elected president for the new year of 2017. He has offended, harassed and body shamed many people of all races and genders. He is a business man, not a politician; yet he ran and became president. Many say he's the next Hitler due to his communication skills and some of the goals he's willing to accomplish; that includes building a wall, temporarily banning muslims from entering the United States, and impose tariffs on goods made in China and Mexico. Andy Goldsworthy is a famous sculpture and photographer from England; however he lives and works in Scotland. He has done sculptures with many natural resources and has expressed himself throughout those sculptures.

Sketches
|
The first sketch was the sketch that went with my original piece, the one with real leaves, that said remember me. The second sketch is the sketch I did last after the MIAD instructor advised me to do some significant changes in mine. I modified it and made it better.
|
Process
|
First, I went to Dollar Tree and bought a white poster board and fake leaves. I drew the map of the United States on the board so I can have an outline and it would facilitate the process of putting the leaves on the board. I cut the leaves off the plastic branches and set them in the outline and filled in the white area. I did some modifications to some leaves so it would look more like the United States. I then went outside and found these brown leaves; I used tacky glue to stick the words together and make them into one letter. I then waited for them to dry off and then set them on the leaves. |
Experimentation
|
This was my first, original piece but the instructor from MIAD advised me to do it out of fake leaves to represent how artificial the United States is and because it kind of looked like a fish, instead of the United States. Also, instead of just placing the leaves next to each other, I decided to glue them which was a bad idea and really time consuming. |
Meaning: This project means a lot to me because it represents the voice for minorities that don't and can't speak for themselves. It represents me, because I will not accept this as my reality; I will not accept him as my president. He has offended minorities, harrased women, and threatened us all. He cannot be my president and I will never accept him. This represents us, the minorities.
Reflection: Throughout this project, I learned that you have to very patient with leaves and tacky glue because if you don't, you will mess up and its really hard to fix the project. I also learned how to manipulate leaves and its positioning for future projects. It was hard but worth the learning. I also learned that it is really useful to get advised from an artist, specifically a MIAD instructor; with their advice there was a lot of improvement and a lot more success in my project. I feel very successful with my result. It came out very different to my original piece as you can see above and that's okay because in my opinion I modified it for the better. I really enjoyed this project; it's unique and I feel like my voice has been heard.
ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
My inspiration, which was the cruelty Donald Trump has created among the people of United states, this has had a lot of effect in my project due to its meaning and representation. I believe that I have changed a lot these past few months, due to him winning the presidential election. I didn't have much knowledge on politics but my anger made me learn and now I know better. It's a way of representing all the races and genders he has offended.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The authors overall approach regarding the topic of my inspiration is that it covers some voices that have been afraid to say something and stand up.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Everyone is scared and have been thinking about leaving America due to his threats; the terror in the eyes are an inspiration to my piece.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my inspirational research was melancholy, and fear. People are afraid what this election and president will cause to their lives and that is having an effect on them.

I believe that people changed a lot in a small amount of time, and that Trump brought a lot of racism back to many minorities.
