Choice Piece - Block Print
Exhibition Text: Sad is a representation of deforestation that is currently occurring all around the world and is destroying our planet. I have combined art and environmental's into one piece of art explaining one of the biggest difficulties the earth is confronting. This piece was inspired by Jill Pelto and deforestation itself.
Planning
Artistic Inspiration: My artistic inspiration was Jill Pelto. Jill Pelto is a new artist who is modern and follows her own movement. Deforestation was also my inspiration because that is one of the actions that affect the whole world in a very severe and drastic manner.
Critical Investigation: Jill Pelto is an artist who is an Artist and a Scientist; and has a Masters of Science. She states that she wants to use her creative skills to communicate information about extreme environmental issues with a broad audience all around the world. Deforestation being one of the major causes that is destroying earth was my main focus and decided in displaying a piece like this. |

Sketches
Process
|
The process was simple. After I finished my sketch, I then colored the back of the sketch with a lead pencil so I can trace the outline of my sketch onto the block print. When I finished tracing the sketch onto the block print, I began carving all the areas where I wanted them to be white. I did not carve the areas that I wanted to stay black. After I finished carving, I then got a piece of paper and set my block print there. Then I grabbed a tray and applied some ink onto it. I smoothed the ink with a roller and then rolled the ink on the black print. After rolling ink a few times on the block print, I grabbed the white paper where the image would be imprinted and positioned it as best as I can. I grabbed another long paper and put it on top of it. I then pressed force with one of the utensils shown below.

Experimentation
I experimented with my sketch and final product. My original sketch did not have a rough background, but after seeing the first print, I really liked the rough background; in a way it symbolizes the rough life trees have in the world of today. Also, I experimented with how I printed the image. We were taught to put pressure with a tamale hand ironer utensil, I used that for the first time and then experimented with a dry roller and the print came out a lot better.
Meaning
This piece means many things to me as the artist and it may also mean anything to the audience. To me it explains the love I have to this world, since it has already given me so much and I haven't given anything back but awareness to it's life and how we take earth for granted. This earth has given us life, family, friends, food, shelter, pets and everything. It holds us together and in a way makes us sane. This piece is the voice this earth does not have to the lack of speaking, so it is transferred onto art. This is my way of helping my home, so it can try to survive with the things it needs or maybe at least die with what it brought to us. It's the least I can possibly do.
Reflection
This project was very well enjoyed due to me being in love with trees and destroyed by the fact that their lives are being terminated. I was hopeful to be able to bring awareness, even if it's only to myself. This project was hard, due to the branches being hard to carve and was also kind of hard because I kept poking myself at home with the utensils due to me not having the board. Five cuts later, I finished carving and was ready to print. The printing to me was hard at first because I was using what was taught, but to me, that wasn't working. I decided to use a different utensil and used the roller instead and my print came out perfect. Basically, this project was great and hard but worth the five cuts!
ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
My inspiration, which was deforestation and Jill Pelto's art mean a lot to my painting due to its meaning and representation. I believe that this block print will probably not make a difference to anyone, but to me it will because I understand how careless this world was. It's a way of representing tree cruelty.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The authors overall approach regarding the topic of my inspiration is that it covers deforestation and loss of humanity towards trees.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Some generalizations and conclusions I have discovered about this certain topic is that people and organizations have been fighting for the lives of trees, but companies don't understand the effect they are making on the world by eliminating one by one.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my inspirational research was melancholy, death and tree cruelty.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I believe that deforestation has had a major impact on the world but not on us humans. We are blind to this.
